The Skyscraper technique is one of the best link building technique in 2019 (discovered by Brian Dean of Backlinko).
Here I am trying to present the tactics in a super easy way. With a free powerful backlink finder tool as a bonus.
Basically, you have to find outdated content with a lot of links and create content with the same topic covering more (key features, well researched, visual elements, in-depth) than that. Be careful your content should be unique. That means your content should provide more unique value.

After publishing your content, just reach out to those who linked the outdated content. Share your content's comparison with the outdated one in a nutshell. Suggest them to use your content as an alternative.
If you proposed 100 peoples to link your content then there must be 30-40 who will link back to you. But remember one thing your content should be more valuable.
If you have Ahrefs than it is damn easy. Just use the content explorer and search for that keyword. Filter the results with a minimum of 100 referring domains to the article.
Then find outdated content manually.
An outdated article has some typical features like,
Now create a new one by yourself. Fill the gaps expertly which not covered in the outdated one.
Reach them who linked the outdated post and show your article. You must have to share the points which you covered in a nutshell.
They will more likely to use your content link as an alternative.
Just do some extra tasks. Find the outdated content with Google search. Keep fetching all the results one by one until an ideal one found.
Now how to check the backlinks of those posts when you don't have Ahrefs.
